- TET2 oxidizes modified cytosines (5mC/5hmC) into protected intermediates.
- 5hmC is protected through glycosylation and therefore is not converted.
- APOBEC3A only deaminates unmethylated cytosines and does not affect methylated or oxidized cytosines.

- “C” represents methylated cytosines (5mC or 5hmC)
- “T” represents unmethylated cytosines
